Back-to-School Checklist: 12 Essentials for Preschool and Grade 1
Starting preschool or Grade 1 can be hectic: which backpack, and do you need a bottle, pencil case and ID holder? This checklist covers 12 items for preschool and first-grade children and shows how backpack size matches age. Always follow your school or preschool's own notice for what is actually required.

The 12-item checklist
Backpack: B5 for preschool, A4 for Grade 1. Wide, adjustable straps and a chest buckle.
Water bottle: enough capacity and easy to open with one hand.
Pencil case: a must for Grade 1; preschoolers can keep crayons and markers in it.
ID holder: for a student card, transit card or pick-up card.
Socks: a few extra pairs for PE and daily wear.
Cap: for outdoor activities and field trips.
Foldable shopping bag: for PE clothes, spare clothes or artwork to take home.
Spare clothes: often needed in preschool; bag them and write a name on them.
Handkerchief and tissues: as the school requires.
Cutlery set: for preschool lunch, as the preschool requires.

Stationery and contact-book cover: as announced by the school for Grade 1.
Choosing the backpack and gear
Backpack — weight, straps, size. It should be light when empty, with wide adjustable straps, and sit mid-back rather than hang to the hips. Many HUGGER designs have a name label inside so you can write your child's name.

Preschool vs Grade 1: what differs
Preschool: mostly daily-life items; choose things that are easy to put on and easy to recognize, and a light B5 backpack.
Grade 1: more books, contact books and stationery, so an A4 backpack and a pencil case are recommended.
4 tips for the week before school
Write or stick your child's name on everything.
Let your child try the bag on and check straps and chest buckle.
Practise opening zippers and taking out the bottle alone.
Pack the bag together to build the habit of packing it themselves.

A4 or B5 for preschool? Most preschoolers do not need A4 books, and B5 is lighter and easier to carry. Follow your preschool's notice.
Should I buy a bigger bag to grow into? Not recommended. An oversized bag sags and swings. Choose the size that fits your child's current height.
Can I machine wash the bag? The lining is coated, so wipe stains gently with detergent and air dry.
